The drawings in this collection were created out of a need to stop collecting postcards merely for archiving purposes and instead turn them into canvases. To the postcards, pages from old books and magazines were added, along with a few contemporary ones, though fewer. The drawings made on these surfaces consist of simple forms and colors, executed with markers and fountain pens. The original postcards and pages possess a natural beauty, whether through their simplicity or their editorial eccentricity. The idea behind the pieces contained in “Things the Past Refused to Leave” is to make them present once again through a whimsical and aesthetically personal intervention, a form of editorial resistance and recycling. Paradoxically, this exercise has only increased the urge to archive, to keep gathering pages and postcards that might later return transformed into something else. Daniel Castrejón is a graphic designer, visual artist, and record-label founder based in Mexico City. – Daniel Castrejón
